Unique ID project begins today

On the occasion of Republic Day, the Unique Identification ( UID) number project will finally get underway in the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) has all geared up to conduct the exercise through various vendors, who will implement the biometric based identification system to create a database for the project.

The project will be launched at 11.45 am at Kavale Math school in Walkeshwar at the hands of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Five other centres in the city will be opened on Wednesday to conduct the biometrics of people for this project.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said, four vendors - Tera Software, Wipro, Karvi and Wep - will set up several centres in the city, in which people have to register their physical impressions like fingerprints and iris. By February 15, about 150 centres will be activated in the city, where three civic employees will also be available during the exercise.

She added that people need not rush to the centres for registering their impressions as the exercise will continue for entire year up to March 30, 2012.

They will be communicated well in advance to attend their centres for the biometrics, along with their identity, residential and birth proofs. They will also have fill KR ( know your residence) form for this exercise. The numbers will be later sent to people by post, she said.
