After all the hoopla about tennis legends Martina Navratilova and Roger Federer being expected at Mahesh Bhupathi and Lara Dutta’s wedding, it turned out to be a strictly private affair with only a few close friends turning up.
The tennis superstar and the Bollywood siren had a registered marriage at a church in Goa on Tuesday. While Bollywood sparkle was missing from the do, the newly-wed couple has planned a gala reception for the glitterati in Mumbai on February 20. A mega sangeet ceremony, to be held on February 19, also promises to be a star- studded affair.
At the church wedding, Lara wore a white outfit created by ace designer Ritu Kumar. Mahesh wore black formals.
Mahesh, meanwhile, posted a picture that was clicked immediately after he exchanged rings with Lara at the church. “ Mr and Mrs Bhupathi folks..:). Anyway the civil ceremony is in an hour so I got to get ready. Pics only on twitter. No Media. Ha take that ( sic)!!” he tweeted.
A section of the media had reported that Navratilova and Federer, good friends of Bhupathi, would fly down to Goa for the wedding, as would Sania Mirza and her cricketer hubby Shoaib Malik. Rumours also did the rounds that Shah Rukh Khan and Leander Paes would be in attendance. However, none of them was spotted at the do.
Paes later clarified: “ I am in Delhi right now and I am surely going to Mumbai on the 19th, to attend the celebrations.” SRK, who was personally invited by Lara, also apparently plans to attend the Mumbai reception with his kids and wife Gauri. Lara, whose last movie Housefull was a hit across the country, had also sent a personal invitation to her close friend Priyanka Chopra for the wedding.
Reportedly, Priyanka was keen to attend the wedding, but could not make it because she is busy promoting her new film 7 Khoon Maaf . News that Lara was involved with Mahesh broke in 2009. Neither of them spoke about the rumours at the time, though Mahesh filed for divorce from his wife of seven years, former model Shveta Jaishankar.
Lara was earlier involved with model Kelly Dorjee and actor Dino Morea. Lara and Mahesh made their first official appearance as a couple in February last year at the Filmfare Awards in Mumbai. The couple got engaged in New York in September last year.
The Lara-Mahesh wedding was the latest in a string of Bollywood weddings. Imran Khan and Avantika as well as Neelam Kothari and Sameer Soni had tied the knot earlier this year.
