Two pupils suspended in JNU MMS video case

Jawaharlal Nehru University ( JNU) on Wednesday suspended two students in connection with the pornographic MMS scandal that has rocked the campus.

Of the two male students who have been suspended, one, who features in the MMS, is a student of JNU’s School of Languages while the other belongs to the computer science department. Both are residents of Tapti hostel.

“The inquiry is not complete yet. The students have been suspended on the basis of prima facie evidence. The order for suspension came late Wednesday evening,” said a university official who did not wish to be identified.

An inquiry into the scandal was initiated by the chief proctor on Friday after the objectionable MMS came to the notice of the security office last week. University proctor H. C. Bohidar was unreachable for comment despite repeated attempts.

Initial probes revealed the MMS circulating in the campus was shot in April 2010. It showed two students in a compromising position. The girl seen in the explicit clip was also a student of the School of Languages and a resident of Tapti hostel. She left the university without graduating in summer last year.

Though their status as students of the university has been suspended, the two haven’t been evicted from their hostels yet.

“ They are still required for questioning in the university inquiry,” the official added.

The preliminary action taken by the administration is in line with the tough stand which JNU’s new vice- chancellor S. K. Sopory had taken against the circulation of the MMS clip. On Tuesday, Sopory had told the media that JNU has no space for such elements on its campus.

The Delhi Police had not registered a case in the scandal till Wednesday as neither the university authorities nor the girl had approached them with a formal complaint.
